The novel for children is based in 18th century Cumbria. The novel follows the adventure of a group of youngsters as they are transported back in time to Keswick and Borrowdale in 1772. They face a land in transition opening up to a wider world through the creation of turnpike roads, they get an insight into lead mining and experience the end of the slave trade. They meet the young Wordsworth family and even Benjamin Franklin, encounter eagles and wildcats, witness bull bating and cock fighting whilst they try to rescue their youngest group member Ben.

About the author

Bill lived and worked in Cumbria for a number of years in the 1980s and ‘90s, returning to his home city of Edinburgh in 2001. This, his first children’s novel, was inspired by his love of the Lake District and its history.
