Celebrating Older Women in Extreme Sport
A woman’s relationship with sport can be a rocky road, full of twists, turns and triumphs. Women can often face both physical and emotional barriers to freely participating in sporting activity, and history tells us it’s been an uphill struggle for women to compete in various sporting events in recent decades.
This exhibition, in Keswick Museum’s Community Gallery, celebrates older women competing in extreme sports, most notably fell running. Cumbria has a strong tradition of fell running and racing across the county. The exhibit features two local veteran female fell runners, Lesley Malarkey and Julie Carter, and celebrates their national success on the fell running scene.
